Surgery for Brain Tumour Removal
at North Downs Specialist Referrals
Kreiger an 11 year old Weimeraner was presented with a history of a recent onset of seizures. Due to his age neurologist Annette Wessman recommended an MRI scan to look for an underlying cause of the problem. The scan demonstrated a 1cm tumour on the surface of the brain.
Due to its location it was possible to remove this tumour with surgery. Although brain surgery carries a high risk it is the treatment most likely to achieve a cure or a long remission of the tumour. Having discussed the risks and benefits of surgery Kriegers owners were keen to proceed.

The surgery team consisted
of two surgeons, an consultant anesthetist and two theatre nurses.
Surgery took 3 hours but the tumour was successfully
removed. Kreiger then received continuous intensive care with one to one nursing for 3 days . His initial recovery was good but several hours after surgery he developed severe seizures.
The seizures required him to be sedated with a continuous infusion of anesthetic. Twenty four hours later he was recovered and the seizures had stopped.
Kreiger was discharged a week after surgery and has since made a full recovery with no further seizures. Pathology confirmed the tumour was a meningioma one of the commonest types of brain tumour.
