Interventional Radiology

Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiology is the use of advanced imaging such as fluoroscopy combined with catheters to allow access into areas of the body to deliver treatment or obtain diagnostic samples in a minimally invasive way.

One of the more common techniques is the placement of stents to open narrowed or collapsed structures. These are well-established techniques in human medicine which have great potential for our veterinary patients. These procedures are currently available at a limited number of centres in the UK.

  • Dedicated interventional radiology suite with state of the art fluoroscopy and advanced anaesthetic monitoring
  • Tracheal stent placement for tracheal collapse
  • Stent placement for urethral tumours and strictures
  • SUB placement (Subcutaneous Ureteral Bypass for ureteral obstruction)
  • Palliative stent placement for oesophageal and colonic strictures/tumours
  • Ureteral stents
  • Subcutaneous ureteral diversion of ureteral obstruction
  • Interventional cardiology procedures including pacemaker placement, PDA closure and balloon valvuloplasty
  • Interventional procedures for complex portosystemic shunts
  • Embolisation and intra-arterial chemotherapy for selected tumours

Interventional radiology is a multi-disciplinary service with collaboration between the soft tissue surgery, cardiology and diagnostic imaging services.
