Joao graduated with an integrated master’s degree from the University of Lisbon, Portugal, in 2014. He moved to the UK in 2017, where he first completed a rotational internship at North Downs Specialist Referral. In 2021, he completed a cardiology certificate with the University of Liverpool and became an RCVS-recognised Advanced Practitioner in veterinary cardiology.

Joao completed his small animal cardiology ECVIM residency program in 2024 at the University of Cambridge. His areas of interesting research include arrhythmias (especially atrial fibrillation), pulmonary hypertension and feline cardiomyopathies.
