Nursing care is an essential part of the treatment patients receive at our hospital and we are very proud of the high standards of the nursing care we provide. Each patient receives individual nursing care dependent on their needs, which helps optimise their recovery.

Our nursing team is made up of our Registered Veterinary Nurses, Nursing Assistants and our Student Veterinary Nurses.

All our Registered Veterinary Nurses are often very experienced in general practice before joining us and developing more specialist nursing skills. Many have passed further advanced qualifications in veterinary nursing. Some of our nurses have further specialised within specific areas such as medicine, neurology and theatre nursing where they work solely, supporting that area of the hospital with their expertise.

Any nurses that join us, follow a 3-month, in-depth induction regardless of their prior experience. For those who are less than 12 months qualified, you can join our 12-month Post Registration Programme. This ensures that all our nurses are working to a certain level, in order to provide the best quality of care for our patients.

It is a requirement of veterinary nurses registered with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons to continue to develop their knowledge every year, of the most up to date and safe ways of treating patients.

The roles of the veterinary nurses within the hospital are diverse, but include:

  • Day-to-day 24-hour nursing care of inpatients
  • Administering medication
  • Obtaining blood samples and laboratory work
  • Monitoring blood transfusions
  • Providing physiotherapy
  • Performing some diagnostic procedures
  • Maintaining and monitoring anaesthesia
  • Preparing patients for surgical procedures

Referral Nursing – CPD shadowing days

To support skills development for RVNs we offer a limited number of day-long shadowing opportunities here at NDSR. You will spend a day alongside and learning from our fabulous RVNs. Although a lot will depend on caseloads on the day itself, we aim to give you exposure to the variety of roles that make nursing in a referral hospital so rewarding. A day spent shadowing our experienced referral nursing team will also count towards your annual CPD credits. For more details on our CPD shadowing opportunities please email
