Many patients with neurological conditions need prompt investigation and treatment, and so we aim to see urgent neurological cases the same day, where required.

Our team of Neurologists are also happy to provide telephone advice to Veterinary Surgeons on the management of medical and surgical neurological cases.

What to expect if referred to the NDSR Neurology Service?

The starting point for each patient referred to an NDSR Neurologist is a full consultation and discussion with the owner including a detailed neurological examination.

Further investigations are often required, at NDSR we have access to state-of-the-art neuro-diagnostic facilities including on-site high field MRI scanning, CT scanning, EEG, electrodiagnostic testing and 3D printing when required.

NDSR is also home to a state-of-the-art operating suite comprising four operating theatres, operating microscopy, high pressure pneumatic surgical instrumentation, high-spec anaesthesia machines and expert nursing and anaesthesia support.

What are the Most Common Neurological Conditions seen by the Neurology Service?

Patients seen by our Neurology team include those with:

  • Intervertebral disc herniation
  • Epilepsy including cases refractory to conventional treatment
  • Spinal cord diseases including intervertebral disc disease and wobbler syndrome
  • Congenital malformations including spinal malformation
  • Brain and spinal trauma including fractures
  • Brain and spinal tumours including diagnosis, surgical and medical management
  • Infectious and inflammatory CNS diseases
  • Patients demonstrating unexplained weakness or collapse
  • Patients with suspected back pain.

What Facilities are Available at NDSR?

The Neurology team at NDSR is fully supported by our Specialist-led multidisciplinary teams including Diagnostic Imaging, Anaesthesia and Analgesia, Orthopaedics, Internal Medicine, Ophthalmology and Soft Tissue Surgery. Our highly trained clinical support staff, including a team of three dedicated Neurology nurses with additional advanced specific qualifications in Neurology, provide superb levels of nursing care for all patients. Neurological cases can sometimes require intensive care. Our dedicated Intensive Care Unit is equipped to the highest levels, enabling the best possible care and management of such high-dependency cases.

At NDSR we provide a full range of investigations. Our on-site high field MRI scanner produces the highest quality diagnostic images.

Our 16-slice CT scanner allows detailed evaluation of patients with spinal or head trauma. Our on-site lab enables immediate microscopic assessment of cerebro-spinal fluid samples.

In addition, electro-diagnostic testing is available for neuromuscular disorders, DNA testing for inherited conditions and muscle and nerve biopsy can be performed when required.
