Multidisciplinary care helps to save Marie’s eye

Marie

Marie was referred to the Oncology service at NDSR in November 2022. She had a history of a mass affecting her lower left eyelid that was removed at but had regrown.

Laboratory testing showed that the mass was an aggressive cancer that, although rarely spreading elsewhere in the body, would normally require wide surgical margins to successfully remove. In this location, that would often mean removing the eye.

However, the Oncology team, in consultation with the specialist Ophthalmologists at NDSR, were able to offer an alternative surgery that achieved a good margin around the tumour and preserved the eye. The Ophthalmology team performed the surgery which included using part of Marie’s upper lip to reconstruct the lower eyelid, most of which had to be removed.

Marie made a great recovery and laboratory testing revealed that good surgical margins were achieved, and it is unlikely that Marie’s tumour will come back.
