Our Team

Our aim at North Downs Specialist Referrals is to provide first class care for our patients and to give an excellent service to their owners and to the vets who refer cases to us.  It would not be possible to provide such a service without a team of people who are committed to excellence. We are very fortunate in having just such a team of friendly, dedicated and caring staff who constantly strive to do their best for our patients. 

All our staff are actively encouraged to pursue continuing education in their various fields.  They are expected to bring any new ideas and knowledge which they acquire back to the practice to share with their colleagues.  In addition, they all attend regular in-house meetings and are engaged in a system of appraisals.  In this way we hope continually to improve the levels of care and service which the team at North Downs Specialist Referrals provides for our patients, their owners and the vets who entrust their cases to us.


Terry Emmerson


Hospital Director

After graduating from Cambridge University 1994, Terry completed an internship and a 3 year residency in Small Animal Surgery at the Royal Veterinary College. After leaving the Royal Veterinary College, he co-founded North Downs Specialist Referrals.

Terry became a recognised European Specialist in Small Animal Surgery in 1999 and a recognised RCVS Specialist in 2006. He has been Examiner and Chief Examiner for the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Certificate in Small Animal Surgery as well as a member of the RCVS Surgery Board.  He is currently a Trustee of the British College of Veterinary Specialists.

Terry recently contributed to the BSAVA manual of Surgical Principles and lectures regularly on surgical topics. He has vast experience of all aspects of surgery, but has particular interest in cancer surgery and is a member of the Veterinary Society of Surgical Oncology (VSSO).

Terry was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons for Meritorious Contributions to Clinical Practice (MCCP) in 2016.


Josey Killner

Hospital Manager

Josey has worked within the veterinary industry since 1985 when she started as a student nurse at a primary care practice. After 22 years and with an Advanced Veterinary Nurse Diploma in both surgery and medicine, she left the practice to extend her knowledge in a referral centre. Josey was given the position of Head Nurse of Training with the responsibility of the induction and training of all the new nursing staff, alongside her clinical work. During the following 9 years at the practice she saw the staff levels grow from 15 to 170. Josey also organised regular and successful CPD courses for veterinary surgeons and nurses from referring practices, both internally and at external locations.

In January 2016 Josey joined NDSR as Nurse Manager to oversee the running of the nursing team. Josey has excellent communication skills, allowing her to develop close working relationships both with colleagues and clients.  In 2018 Josey became NDSR’s Hospital Manager.


Julie Gerrish

Nursing Manager

Julie has worked within the veterinary industry for 20 years. After qualifying in 2002 she remained working in first opinion practice for one year before developing her career working at the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals, Royal Veterinary College. Julie has a keen interest in surgery and surgical nursing and progressed her career working as a specialised theatre nurse. After gaining her Advanced Surgical Nursing Diploma in 2007 she went on to become the Senior Theatre Nurse whilst at the RVC which involved co-ordinating surgical caseload and a team of theatre nurses whilst also working clinically within the theatre suite.

Julie joined North Downs in April 2011 as the Theatre Nursing Supervisor where she continued her dedication working in surgery. She was responsible for the daily scheduling and co-ordinating of the surgical procedures and organising the team of nurses to ensure efficient running of theatre. During her time in this role the team of dedicated theatre nurses has grown and Julie has also been successful in obtaining her American Veterinary Technician Specialist certificate in Surgery and is one of three other RVN’s who currently hold this specialised qualification in the UK.

Julie returned from maternity leave in 2018 as the Nursing Manager at North Downs and currently manages the experienced team of 55 nurses and 18 nursing assistants.


Kelly Still


Business Relationship Manager

Kelly has worked within the veterinary industry for the last 20 years. After qualifying as a Veterinary Nurse in 2004 she furthered her experience in practice by working as a locum in the UK and Australia. In 2007 she was appointed as Head Nurse in a busy first opinion practice. Here she successfully organised and ran nurse clinics as a Pet Health Counsellor and arranged client information evenings. Kelly also trained student veterinary nurses during this time.

In January 2011 Kelly joined North Downs Specialist Referrals whilst studying for her Advanced Nursing Diploma which she completed in 2012. Kelly then developed her role to obtain a senior nurse position with the Specialist Internal Medicine team and also provided maternity cover for the Ward Supervisor whilst studying for a certificate in emergency and critical care. After her own maternity leave Kelly returned to North Downs as Ward Supervisor.

In April 2018 Kelly made the exciting transition away from nursing to pursue a new challenge as Business Relationship Manager. Kelly intends to strengthen relationships between NDSR and both existing and new veterinary practices within her new role.


Michael Williams


Facilities Manager

Michael began his career in facilities management in the financial sector in 2007. Since then Michael has worked in many industries including construction, dental and the actuarial sector. Working in a multitude of challenging environments, Michael has gained valuable knowledge and experience across many areas including building management, health & safety, IT and office services. In addition Michael is also a fully qualified carpenter. This wide experience of facilities management made Michael an excellent choice for North Downs Specialist Referrals and joined as Facilities Manager in May 2014.
